Recruitment Glossary

Holacracy

Holacracy is a defined organisational operating system that distributes authority through explicit roles, nested circles, governance rules, and meeting processes set out in the Holacracy Constitution. People may hold several roles, and authority attaches to those roles rather than relying only on a conventional management hierarchy.

Recruiter Focus

Recruiters hiring into a Holacracy-based organisation need to explain how role assignments, accountabilities, domains, circle membership, priorities, performance support, pay, and employment management work in practice. Candidates should not be told simply that there are “no managers”, because legal employers and formal decision authorities still exist.

Why Holacracy Matters

The model changes how work and authority are described, which can affect job design, candidate expectations, onboarding, progression, and accountability. A vague claim of self-management can conceal unclear priorities or power, while an accurate role map helps candidates judge whether the operating environment suits them.

Terms Recruiters Commonly Compare

Flat organisation

A flat organisation has fewer management layers but may still depend on conventional job authority. Holacracy uses a specific constitutional system of roles, circles, governance, and distributed authority.

Agile team

Agile methods organise product or project delivery through particular principles and practices. Holacracy governs organisational roles and authority; an organisation can use either approach without the other.

Recruitment Example

A product company recruits a designer who will initially fill separate roles for research, design systems, and one product circle. The hiring brief explains each role’s purpose and accountabilities, who assigns those roles, which decisions each controls, how governance changes them, and how salary and employment concerns are handled outside circle work.

A role is not the whole employment relationship

Constitutional roles define operational purpose, accountabilities, domains, and policies. The employing organisation must still make compensation, working-time, leave, safety, conduct, equality, privacy, and termination responsibilities understandable.

Implementation Playbook

  • Confirm whether the organisation has formally adopted the Holacracy Constitution or merely borrowed circle and role language.
  • Describe the initial roles, their purposes, accountabilities, domains, circle relationships, and likely time allocation.
  • Explain who controls role assignment, priorities, pay, leave, conduct, performance support, and employment decisions.
  • Assess candidates against the actual work and operating practices rather than assuming everyone needs the same self-management personality.
  • Give new starters training, current governance records, decision examples, and a named route for employment or wellbeing concerns.

Common Mistakes

  • Describing Holacracy as an absence of structure, rules, leadership, or accountability.
  • Writing one fixed job description while expecting the person to energise several changing roles.
  • Using constitutional terminology without implementing its governance and authority processes.
  • Assuming distributed operational authority removes statutory director, employer, safety, or data responsibilities.

Questions Recruiters Ask

Does Holacracy remove managers?

It replaces much conventional managerial authority with explicit role and circle authorities, but people still fill leadership and structural roles. Employers also retain legal and organisational responsibilities that cannot simply be renamed away.

Is Holacracy the same as self-management?

Holacracy is one codified approach to distributed authority and self-management. Other organisations use sociocracy, autonomous teams, cooperatives, or their own systems with different rules.

Can one person hold several Holacracy roles?

Yes. Roles describe organisational work rather than being identical to people or full-time jobs. One person can energise multiple roles, and a role can have multiple assignments under the framework.
