Boolean search

Boolean search is a way of combining concepts with logical operators so a recruitment database or search platform includes, groups, or excludes specified terms. Recruiters commonly use AND, OR, NOT, quotation marks, and parentheses, although supported syntax and precedence vary between systems.

Recruiter Focus

A useful Boolean query translates the role brief into separate concept groups: titles, skills, domains, products, qualifications, and carefully chosen exclusions. The recruiter then reviews real results, adds missing language used by suitable people, and removes conditions that exclude relevant profiles.

Why Boolean search Matters

Boolean logic gives a sourcer explicit control over a keyword search and makes the reasoning easier to inspect. It also searches the words and indexed fields available to the platform—not the whole person. Strong candidates may use different titles, languages, abbreviations, or descriptions, while an exact keyword match may have little depth or recency.

Semantic search

Boolean search follows explicit logical relationships between terms. Semantic search attempts to retrieve conceptually related results even when the same words are absent. Recruiters can use both and should still inspect why results were included or missed.

Search filter

A filter narrows a structured field such as location, employer, or qualification. Boolean logic usually operates across keywords or selected text fields; platform-specific filters can be more dependable for consistently structured data.

Recruitment Example

For a data engineering search, the recruiter begins with `("data engineer" OR "analytics engineer") AND (Python OR Scala) AND (Airflow OR Dagster)`. After reviewing results, they discover that the mandatory orchestration group excludes credible candidates whose profiles describe pipeline scheduling differently, so they move that concept into a follow-up search rather than continually adding more operators.

Implementation Playbook

  • Build one concept at a time and test the result count and relevance after each change.
  • Put genuine synonyms in an OR group, use quotation marks only for phrases that must stay together, and use parentheses to make the intended logic visible.
  • Use filters for structured fields such as location, employer, or seniority when the platform handles them more reliably than free-text keywords.
  • Inspect false positives and false negatives with the hiring manager or a subject specialist, then record the language learned from suitable profiles.
  • Save a small family of purposeful searches for different candidate profiles instead of forcing every acceptable background into one unreadable string.
  • Check the current help documentation for each platform before using wildcards, symbols, or long strings.

Common Mistakes

  • Combining every desired skill with AND until only candidates who repeat the job description can appear.
  • Using NOT for an ambiguous word and silently excluding relevant people.
  • Copying syntax between platforms that interpret operators, fields, stop words, or wildcards differently.
  • Judging search quality by result count alone rather than by qualified and newly discovered profiles.

Questions Recruiters Ask

What do AND, OR, and NOT do in a candidate search?

AND usually requires both concepts, OR accepts alternatives, and NOT excludes a term. Exact behaviour, capitalisation, field coverage, and operator limits depend on the platform, so its current documentation remains authoritative.

Why does a Boolean string return no suitable candidates?

It may be too restrictive, use unsupported syntax, require wording that profiles do not contain, or search the wrong field. Remove one condition at a time, inspect nearby profiles, and test alternative language before concluding that the market is empty.

Should recruiters use one master Boolean string?

Usually not. Separate searches can represent different but valid candidate profiles and are easier to test. A single enormous query can hide conflicting logic and make it difficult to learn which concept improved or damaged the result.
