About the role

[Company name] is seeking an Accountant to support accurate reporting across [entities or areas]. You will prepare and review entries, reconcile balances, investigate differences, maintain working papers, and help the finance team meet close and control commitments.

What you will be responsible for

  • Prepare journals, schedules, reconciliations, and supporting records for assigned accounts.
  • Investigate unusual balances, timing differences, missing evidence, and control exceptions.
  • Support month-end, year-end, statutory, tax, management-reporting, and audit processes within scope.
  • Maintain accounting policies, master data, documentation, approvals, and segregation controls.
  • Explain financial movements to budget owners and improve recurring transaction or close problems.

What success looks like

  • Reports distinguish confirmed results, estimates, judgements, and unresolved items.
  • Audit and control requests can be answered from organised, traceable records.

Essential qualifications

  • Accounting experience across relevant ledgers, close activities, reconciliations, and controls.
  • Knowledge of the reporting framework and local requirements relevant to the assigned work.
  • Strong numerical checking, investigation, spreadsheet, systems, and documentation skills.
  • Professional judgement with confidential information, estimates, deadlines, and escalation.

Preferred qualifications

  • Relevant accounting qualification or progress towards one where required for the work.
  • Experience with [sector, ERP, multi-entity, currency, tax, audit, or reporting environment].

Tools and working knowledge

  • ERP, general-ledger, or accounting platform
  • Spreadsheet, reconciliation, close, and reporting tools
  • Expense, billing, payroll-interface, document, and audit systems

Compensation: [Add approved range, currency, qualification support, overtime or close-period expectations, and benefits.]

[Company name] will discuss reasonable adjustments for numerical exercises, interviews, close-period work, and the workplace.

How to apply

Performance expectations

What good performance looks like

Use these outcomes to replace vague activity lists with the evidence the hiring manager expects to see after the person joins.

Close work is completed to timetable with fewer unsupported or late adjustments.

Reconciliations drive investigation and clearance rather than carrying unexplained items.

Process improvements preserve review, segregation, evidence, and auditability.

Questions to settle before advertising

Record specific answers so sourcing, screening, and interview decisions use the same definition of the role.

  1. 1

Which entities, ledgers, standards, currencies, taxes, and transaction areas are assigned?

  2. 2

What close calendar, audit, reporting, and seasonal workload applies?

  3. 3

Which qualification is legally or operationally required rather than merely preferred?

  4. 4

Who prepares, reviews, approves, posts, and owns correction of each key output?

Evaluation criteria

Evidence to use in a Accountant scorecard

Agree the criteria before interviews begin, then score examples against the same evidence standard.

Accounting judgement
Connects substance, evidence, policy, estimate, entry, review, and disclosure.
Relies on prior treatment or system output without testing appropriateness.
Reconciliation discipline
Explains source, timing, difference, owner, clearance action, review, and prevention.
Treats a matched total as complete without examining old or unusual items.
Control awareness
Maintains evidence and segregation while improving efficiency.
Removes review or traceability to meet a deadline.

Structured interview

Accountant interview questions and strong signals

Ask the same core questions in the same order, then use follow-ups to understand the candidate’s individual contribution.

1

Tell me about a reconciliation that balanced but was still wrong.

Strong answer signal

Finds a classification, timing, duplicate, scope, or source issue and improves the check.

2

How do you handle a late request for an unsupported journal during close?

Strong answer signal

Clarifies materiality and evidence, follows authority, documents judgement, and escalates appropriately.

3

Describe a recurring accounting task you improved.

Strong answer signal

Shows root cause, control preservation, ownership, implementation, and measured change.
