About the role

[Company name] is hiring an HVAC Technician for [equipment and territory]. You will complete authorised installation and maintenance, diagnose faults, handle refrigerants and energy safely, document work, and return systems to controlled operation.

What you will be responsible for

  • Inspect, maintain, install, test, commission, and repair assigned HVAC or refrigeration equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, airflow, control, refrigerant, combustion, or sensor faults within competence.
  • Use approved isolation, refrigerant recovery, leak, pressure, working-at-height, confined-space, and return-to-service controls.

What success looks like

  • Systems return to service with recorded readings, repair, test, and customer hand-over.
  • Refrigerant, energy, safety, parts, and disposal records meet local requirements.

Essential qualifications

  • HVAC or refrigeration training and current local licences required for assigned work.
  • Practical fault-finding across the equipment, controls, and energy sources in scope.
  • Safe isolation, refrigerant, pressure, access, documentation, and customer-site habits.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with [equipment, refrigerant, control system, building type, or manufacturer].
  • Additional locally recognised electrical, gas, heat-pump, air-quality, or energy credential.

Tools and working knowledge

  • HVAC diagnostic, pressure, temperature, airflow, leak, and electrical instruments
  • Refrigerant recovery, vacuum, charging, hand, access, and protective equipment
  • Field service, asset, parts, permit, and reporting systems

Compensation: [Add approved hourly or salary range, currency, on-call, overtime, call-out, travel, vehicle, tools, and benefits.]

[Company name] will assess essential site and equipment functions individually and discuss reasonable adjustments.

How to apply

Performance expectations

What good performance looks like

Use these outcomes to replace vague activity lists with the evidence the hiring manager expects to see after the person joins.

Maintenance records show condition, measurement, work, parts, test, and follow-up.

Diagnosis addresses the cause rather than repeated reset or component replacement.

Questions to settle before advertising

Record specific answers so sourcing, screening, and interview decisions use the same definition of the role.

  1. 1

Which equipment, refrigerants, fuels, voltages, controls, buildings, and territory apply?

  2. 2

Which licences, certificates, permits, background checks, and continuing education are required locally?

  3. 3

What on-call, response, travel, ladder, roof, confined-space, weather, and lifting conditions apply?

Evaluation criteria

Evidence to use in a HVAC Technician scorecard

Agree the criteria before interviews begin, then score examples against the same evidence standard.

HVAC diagnosis
Uses symptoms, readings, sequence, drawings, airflow, energy, control, and equipment history.
Replaces likely parts before measurements isolate the fault.
Safe service
Controls isolation, refrigerant, pressure, access, combustion, test, and hand-over.
Restarts equipment without complete safety and performance checks.

Structured interview

HVAC Technician interview questions and strong signals

Ask the same core questions in the same order, then use follow-ups to understand the candidate’s individual contribution.

1

Tell me about a comfort complaint whose cause was not the main unit.

Strong answer signal

Investigates load, controls, airflow, distribution, sensor, building use, and evidence.

2

What would you do if a customer asked for an unapproved refrigerant shortcut?

Strong answer signal

Explains the safety and legal boundary, offers compliant options, and documents.
